00MASON, OH, May 1, 2006 – L-3 Communications Cincinnati Electronics (L-3 CE), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation, has been selected to provide the NightConqueror 640 environmentally enclosed thermal imager for the U.S. Navy’s first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Prime contractor Lockheed Martin is using Navantia’s DORNA Fire Control Director, which includes L-3 CE’s infrared imager, on its design for USS Freedom (LCS-1), the first LCS to join the U.S. Navy’s surface fleet.
00LCS is designed to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance in the coastal water battlespace. A fast, maneuverable and networked surface combatant, the LCS provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute focused missions close to the shore, such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare. LCS will be networked to share tactical information with other naval aircraft, ships, submarines, joint and coalition units and LCS groups, providing commanders with the right information quickly and efficiently.
00L-3 CE will provide the NightConqueror 640 Infrared Thermal Imaging System in a marine-proven environmental enclosure. The system will contain a dual field of view 100/500mm telescopic lens for navigation, target tracking and situational awareness 24 hours a day and in degraded weather conditions (smoke and obscurants).
